Why Does My Computer Keep Showing Ads?

If your computer is repeatedly showing ads, especially when you first start it or are doing something non-web related (like using your word processor), you’ve got an adware infection on your system. It’s extremely annoying to have to constantly close those ads just to keep using the thing, but luckily there are a few easy ways to get rid of them.

What Is Adware?
Adware is a type of malicious code designed to, similar to a virus, infect your computer and throw ads all over the place. In addition to the generic slew of dating ads and the like, some infections go so far as to act like legitimate removal programs, warning the user that their computer is unsafe and needs to be protected. Don’t be fooled by this; it’s just a ploy to get you to pay to remove their mess, and will do nothing to actually protect your system from further threats.

But I Have A Virus Scanner!
Because of the way in which adware operates, it doesn’t get detected by most virus scanning programs, which lean more towards malware that will actually cause damage to the system. In the eyes of anti-virus software, adware is just really annoying, but not threatening.

How Do I Remove This Stuff?
You need quality anti-adware software installed on your computer. My personal favorite would be NoAdware, because of its features and interface. You can read the full NoAdware Review here to learn more about it, or take a look at the full list of Adware Removal Programs which are sorted by member feedback.

Pretty much any computer that is used to access the internet can be vulnerable to adware, and it’s worth it to at least use the free scans that NoAdware and the like offer to make sure your computer is completely clean.
